Dear Community Members.
Dreaming is easy. Acting on the dream is harder. Recognising that dream is a journey.
Last Saturday, 24 February 2018, BAAWA embarked on its journey to secure State (WA) recognition of 21st February as the International Mother Language Day (IMLD) with a solemn multicultural performance from Bangladeshi, Nepalese and Tamil Association of WA.
It gave us hope and confidence when Hon. Paul Papalia CSC, MLA, Minister for Tourism; Racing and Gaming; Small Business; Defence Issues; Citizenship and Multicultural Interests stated in WA Parliament that he will attend the BAAWA IMLD celebration 2018 and assured BAAWA of McGowan Government support in all future IMLD initiatives.
And when Kim Ellwood, Executive Director, Office of Multicultural Interests (OMI) delays her attendance of her best friend’s wedding to join the program and sends a ‘Join Group’ request to the BAAWA Facebook page first thing today, we realise that our journey probably won’t be a long one.
The event was full of hope and respect. The program was a tribute to the language martyrs of Bangladesh and highlighted the importance of preserving mother tongue in a multilingual and multicultural context.
My heartfelt thanks and deep respect to all the participants and the organizers:
